New project breaks ground at Markham Rd and Major Mac.

It’s been a long time coming, but the ground has finally been officially broken on a significant development that will dramatically reshape the area around Markham Rd. and Major Mackenzie Drive. The 32-acre site, once home to Emerson Electric, has been empty and unsightly for over a decade as various plans were shaped and shelved before LeBanc Developments finally acquired the property and brought forward workable plans.

The lands will be developed in phases, but the first two are officially underway as of this week and will consist primarily of modern, “chic, contemporary style” townhomes. Mid-rise (12-story) buildings will eventually fill in the northerly part of the property with high-rise components to be built along the Markham Rd corridor. But the details of how many and how high are still to be ironed out for the remaining parts of the property.
