Markham student publishes novel with hopes of inspiring young readers

Ananiya Narmathan, a student at St. Augustine Catholic High School, has published a novel in the hopes of inspiring young readers.

“Kimberley With An E” is a captivating children’s book that delves into the theme of embracing individuality, especially when it comes to one’s name. Kimberley is a bright and imaginative girl whose name is often unintentionally mispronounced as “Kimber-lay” instead of “Kimber-lee” by teachers, classmates, and even strangers.

When asked why she decided to write the book, she said: “Witnessing my sister’s struggles and experiencing first-hand the importance of having your name pronounced correctly inspired me to write my book (which) follows the story of a girl named Kimberley and how she gains the confidence to teach others the right way to say her name.”

Narmathan describes the novel as a heartwarming story that inspires young readers to find the beauty in their own names and encourages respect, support, and inclusivity among friends.

“My mentors and supporters for writing have always been my English teachers, especially my high school ones,” Narmathan said. “They’ve helped me recognize the power of words by continuously challenging me to write from new perspectives, embody different techniques, and delve into different plots. Growing up I would often write little snippets of stories and scenes outside of my daily classwork to allow my imagination to roam free.”

Like everyone else, she had lots of time to fill at home during the pandemic. She didn’t sit around and feel sorry for herself, rather she saw it as an opportunity to expand her creative writing skills.

“It was during COVID-19, however, that I really began to dive deeper into writing—creating daily journal entries, experimenting with poems, testing specific writing techniques, and eventually taking the leap and joining my school’s newspaper.”

The writing skills developed during the pandemic gave Mat the confidence to take the leap and write her own book which is available online.
