Markham mayor showcases tech growth and future vision during State of the City speech

Mayor Frank Scarpitti delivered his annual State of the City address in early November, highlighting Markham’s achievements over the past year and outlining goals for the year ahead. He emphasized the city’s leadership in artificial intelligence, energy conservation, the culinary sector, and local sports development.

The City of Markham plans to expand its investment in artificial intelligence to strengthen its position as Canada’s high-tech capital. “AI is changing the world, and Markham companies are at the forefront,” said Scarpitti.

He also highlighted the positive impact of the recently completed York University Markham Campus, noting that its focus on technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship aligns closely with the city’s priorities. The campus is expected to draw top talent into Markham.

Scarpitti reiterated his enthusiasm for the upcoming Honda Indy event, saying, “The world is well underway for what will be the largest sporting event ever in York Region, and we know it will be an unqualified success.”

“When we’re out front, leading the way, as Markham is — it’s easier to see the horizon because there is no one and nothing ahead of us to obscure our view of the path forward,” Scarpitti said as he wrapped up his speech.
