Markham leaders support fundraising effort to help Hong Kong fire victims

Markham has strong ties with communities around the world, and one of those relationships was on full display as local leaders and residents took part in a Toronto-based charity concert supporting victims of a deadly Hong Kong fire.

The tragic November 26 fire, which occurred at Hung Fuk Court in Tai Po, claimed 161 lives — including a firefighter who died in the line of duty — and injured 79 others. In a single night, countless families lost loved ones and were left without homes.

Moved by the tragedy, members of the Chinese community across the GTA, including many in Markham, quickly mobilized to turn compassion into action. The fundraising initiative, Toronto Responds: Support for Hong Kong Fire Victims, was officially launched in December 2025 by the Toronto Chinese community, with all proceeds directed through the CPAC Foundation (Canadian Chinese Professionals Association Foundation) to The Community Chest of Hong Kong. The independent non-profit ensures that 100 per cent of donations go directly to relief services, providing urgent financial assistance to affected families.

A key highlight of the campaign was the charity concert held on January 11 at Splendid China Mall. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Regional Councillor Alan Ho were two of the 14 co-chairs of the event, underscoring Markham’s leadership in the regional response.

Through live performances and community donations, the concert raised $50,000, sending a powerful message of solidarity from Markham and the wider Toronto region to families in Tai Po.

Using music to unite people and generosity to spark change, the effort delivered not only financial support, but also hope and compassion to those rebuilding their lives after tragedy.
