Markham Cycling Day returns with new family routes, festivities

Cyclists of all levels will be back and better than ever this June to join in on one of Markham’s most iconic outdoor events. Markham Cycling Day, the largest public cycling event in York Region, will return this year on June 15, featuring fun, fitness, and community spirit.
Main Street Markham will become the hub of celebration from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering a variety of activities, races, and routes for every kind of rider. This event, often referred to as the “Tour de Markham,” typically has more than 1,000 participants and has become a staple tradition for residents.
This year, Markham Cycling Day plans to be even more inclusive, especially for families. Along with the beloved 15 km, 30 km, and 60 km routes from previous years, new shorter routes will be available.
“We’re thrilled to introduce a brand-new 5 and 8 km route for families to enjoy together,” says the event organizers. These new options encourage younger riders and newcomers to participate for the first time. At the main event site, there will be age-appropriate races in a safe and friendly environment for young cyclists ages 3 to 5.
The day is more than just a bike ride; it offers a chance to explore Markham’s beauty. “Get ready to discover hidden gems and beautiful neighbourhoods as we ride through the city,” event organizers say. With different routes created for advanced cyclists and beginners, the event promises a great time for everyone.
This annual tradition is supported by Markham Cycles, a local organization working to encourage cycling and make bikes more accessible through their repairs, community support, or Bicycle Lending Library program. Each year, with the arrival of the warm weather, they offer help to all kinds of cyclists.
With Markham’s ever-expanding infrastructure for cyclists, now is a great time to start cycling or get back into it. Bring your family and friends for a morning of fresh air, fitness, and fun.
Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just looking for a new way to enjoy the city, Markham Cycling Day offers the perfect excuse to grab your helmet and get rolling.
