Markham at the Movies returns with Akashi film

Markham at the Movies returns to Markham Theatre on Oct. 27 with a screening of Akashi, a multigenerational love story told across parallel timelines.

The film follows Kana (Mayumi Yoshida), a struggling artist living in Vancouver who returns to Tokyo for her grandmother’s funeral after spending 10 years abroad. Feeling increasingly out of place, Kana reflects on a secret shared only between her and her grandmother: her grandfather had another lover.

Her return also brings an unexpected reunion with Hiro, an old love from her past.

Moving between the present and the past, Akashi explores her grandfather’s decades-long affair while Kana confronts long-hidden family truths. As she pieces together the complexities of her family’s history, she is forced to consider love, sacrifice and the choices that shape a life caught between desire and duty.

The film runs one hour and 40 minutes and is presented in Japanese with English subtitles.
