Markham appoints new deputy fire chief

A “dedicated” member of Markham Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) has been appointed deputy fire chief.

Before joining MFES as a suppression firefighter nearly 20 years ago and advancing to the rank of battalion chief, Robert Garland worked as a registered nurse.

That dual experience has shaped his “holistic approach” to emergency response, enabling him to integrate critical thinking, compassionate care and operational efficiency in his role, the City of Markham reports.

Garland recently completed an 11-month secondment as deputy fire chief. “Deputy Fire Chief Garland has been a pillar of dedication and excellence within MFES,” says Fire Chief Chris Nearing. “His unique combination of medical and firefighting expertise, coupled with his proven leadership, positions him perfectly to help lead our team into the future.”

As deputy fire chief, Garland will focus on fostering operational excellence, maintaining the highest safety standards and strengthening the department’s connection to the community. His forward-thinking leadership will support MFES’s ongoing mission to provide exceptional emergency services and protect the lives and property of Markham’s residents, the City adds.

“The appointment of Robert Garland to deputy fire chief is a testament to the Services’ ability to recruit and develop well-rounded leaders that are community builders and focused on innovating in the field of fire prevention and protection,” says Chief Administrative Officer Andy Taylor.
