‘Grow a greener Markham’ with LEAF program

Residents can help “grow a greener Markham” by taking advantage of the Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF) Backyard Tree Planting Program.

“The City of Markham is excited to partner with York Region to bring back the LEAF Backyard Tree Planting Program for our residents,” Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti says.

“Planting a tree is a simple way to make a real difference in our community. Trees help make our neighbourhoods greener and more beautiful and provide a home for local wildlife. Through this program, residents can get expert advice and support at a reduced cost, making it easier to plant trees and enjoy the benefits for years to come. I encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity and help grow a greener Markham.”

Through the program, now in its eighth year, eligible property owners can choose from more than 30 native tree species and receive personalized planting advice and services from a certified arborist for $100 per deciduous tree or $50 per evergreen tree (select species only). The program is available to residential, multi-unit and commercial properties, with a limit of five trees per property per year, space permitting.

“Native tree planting is a powerful tool for improving both individual properties and the wider urban environment,” says LEAF Executive Director Janet McKay. “It reduces heat in neighbourhoods, improves air quality, supports local biodiversity and contributes to a more resilient community.”

Receive an in-person consultation with a LEAF arborist, who assesses yard conditions, such as sunlight, soil quality and available space, and recommends species best suited to the site. Full-service planting is available, with LEAF staff returning to complete the planting. A do-it-yourself option is also offered for those who prefer to plant on their own. Detailed care instructions are provided to help ensure long-term tree health and success.
