Fundraising gala supports domestic violence survivors

A charitable organization that raises funds and awareness for survivors of domestic violence is inviting you to support a Celebration of Resilience.

“At Yellow Brick House, we are committed to fostering a community of support and empowerment for survivors of domestic violence,” says CEO Lorris Herenda. “Our Celebration of Resilience fundraiser embodies this commitment, providing crucial resources and advocating for those in need.”

The fundraiser will be held Wednesday, May 1 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Angus Glen Golf and Country Club at 10080 Kennedy Rd. in Markham and will feature food from some of York Region’s finest local restaurants, silent/live auctions and an inspiring survivor story.

“Unfortunately, the need for our services remains alarmingly high,” Herenda says. “Last year alone, 67 women and children in Ontario lost their lives due to domestic violence. Celebration of Resilience serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of our mission and the urgency of our cause.”

Since its inception in 1978, Yellow Brick House has provided life-saving services and prevention programs to empower more than 145,000 women and children, facilitating the rebuilding of their lives. In the past year alone, it supported more than 5,000 women and children, offering more than 12,700 hours of counselling and court assistance while providing refuge to more than 160 people in its two emergency shelters in York Region.

Funds raised at the 2024 Yellow Brick House Celebration of Resilience will support Nights of Safety in its shelters, which cost $200 per woman or child per night. In addition to crisis counselling and family court support, women and children receive immigration coordination, and assistance with financial and transitional housing support. Yellow Brick House services are free, confidential and available in 31 languages.

Visit to purchase tickets, which are $200 per person and $2,000 for a table of 10, to make a donation and/or to learn more about donating auction items.
