Fresh food markets bring affordable produce to York Region
York Region Food Network (YRFN) Fresh Food Markets connect farmers and suppliers with residents across the region, offering affordable, high-quality fresh produce.
YRFN is a charitable organization that delivers programs and services to support food security, while educating and advocating to reduce food insecurity. The markets run year-round, creating a local hub where communities can access high-quality fruit and vegetable produce at affordable prices. YRFN aims to engage the community by offering produce samples and recipes made with the produce.
In Markham, the market will be held at 105 Gibson Centre on Nov. 13 and 27 and Dec. 11 from noon to 1:30 p.m. In Stouffville, the market is held at the 55+ Club on Nov. 4 and 18, and Dec. 2 and16 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
“Our markets bring people a lot of joy. As a market facilitator, I have the opportunity to build connections with people. Through conversations, recipe sharing and tastings, I’m introducing people to produce that’s new to them, says Christina Lu, YRFN Community Food Animator.
“I regularly hear people share stories of cooking produce that’s new to them and introducing their families to new foods – it’s incredible to see the joy, enthusiasm and pride this brings. I also know people shop for themselves, other family members, neighbours and friends. The impact goes well beyond those who attend the market.”
