Firefighters to use $19K grant to create videos

Lights, camera, action! Markham Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) will use a grant from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada to produce several videos to educate residents about the importance of fire safety.

“Throughout this year, we have worked hard to reach residents who are spending a lot more time at home due to COVID-19 public health measures,” says MFES Chief Adam Grant.

“This year’s $19,210 grant will help us educate youth about public safety by creating and sharing high-quality videos – a format that is visually appealing and accessible. It will also help us reach people in Markham’s diverse communities who may find video more accessible than text,” he says. “As firefighters, we are very proud that a business started by former firefighters is giving back to the community.”

The videos will be shared with students in Grades 1 through 4 and will also be available for public viewing online on Markham Fire and Emergency’s YouTube channel. “MFES is a leader in fire prevention education and this grant will further assist them in sharing important life-saving information using effective communications tools,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti.

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada is dedicated to improving the lifesaving capabilities of first responders and public safety organizations in communities served by Firehouse Subs by providing funding, resources and support.

“We are honoured to be able to award this grant and do our part to ensure that Markham is safer for everyone, including first responders,” says Robin Peters, Executive Director of the foundation. MFES received a grant of nearly $5,000 in 2019 that helped fund messaging about fire escape planning on its fleet of firetrucks.
