Doors Open Markham returns with cultural landmarks to explore

Markham residents and visitors will have the chance to step inside some of the city’s most fascinating cultural and historical sites when Doors Open Markham returns Sept. 26.

Among the featured locations is the York District School Board Museum and Archives, where visitors can experience a recreated late-1800s classroom and try writing on slates.

At the Markham Museum, visitors can go behind the scenes during a 30-minute guided tour of the collections vault, archives and curatorial workroom — areas that are rarely open to the public.

Markham Village will also offer a 45-minute guided walking tour of the “Heart of Markham Village.” The tour will highlight historic buildings and sites in the commercial core, with tours running between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Art enthusiasts can visit the McKay Art Centre and Varley Art Gallery, which will also be among the sites welcoming visitors.

The event is part of Doors Open Ontario, a province-wide initiative celebrating its 25th year of opening historical and cultural sites to the public.

Doors Open Markham takes place on Sept. 26, with most events running from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.
