Children’s festival offers free attractions, entertainment

Hop on a train, get lost in a fun house maze, and try your hand at inflatable sports and mini putt at the Markham-Milliken Children’s Festival.

The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. outside the Aaniin Community Centre at 5665 14th Ave.

In addition to the activities listed above, the play-all-day pass includes access to a fun house slide, giant wacky dual slide, fun house obstacle, inflatable carnival and double axe throw. The pass is $10 if purchased before Friday, Sept. 9 or $14 at the event. Credit and debit are accepted; no cash. The pass also includes free recreational swimming at the Aaniin pool at 1:30 or 2:45 p.m. Space is limited to 100 people in the pool and admission will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

There’s no charge for admission to the festival, which offers free attractions and live entertainment, including a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and interactive activities area where kids can invent a useful tool from a mystery bag, design and build a mini city, or create a floatation device. Free attractions also include a building block area, interactive deejay, magician, clown, animal education and mascots.

The Aaniin Public Library hosts an outdoor story time at 10 a.m. and invites you to check out the Makerspace equipment in the library and watch demonstrations of 3D printing, Cricut machine, and green screen and editing from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. It will also host a scavenger hunt inside the library.

A host of vendors will be on site with food and drinks. You’re encouraged to take a reusable water bottle that you can fill up inside the community centre’s water refill stations.

Parking will be available at Milliken Mills Community Centre & Library. Free shuttles will run between Milliken Mills Community Centre & Library and the Markham-Milliken Children’s Festival beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the last shuttle to the festival at 6 p.m. and the last shuttle departing to Milliken Mills Community Centre & Library at 7:30 p.m. Additional limited parking will be available within walking distance to the festival at Middlefield Collegiate Institute.
