Canada Day Celebration marks anniversary of flag

This year’s Canada Day Celebration commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Canadian flag and will be co-headlined by Canadian musical talents Alx Veliz and Jamie Fine.

“Join us in celebrating 60 years of our flag and the strength of our nation.” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “A day of unity, pride and world-class entertainment awaits. Let’s celebrate the True North, Strong and Free!”

Veliz is the Latin-Jamaican pop sensation behind the Platinum hit Dancing Kizomba, while four-time Juno-nominated artist Fine is known for her Platinum hit If Anything’s Left.

The celebration, to be held Tuesday, July 1 from 3 to 10:30 p.m. at Markham Centre in Downtown Markham at Birchmount Road and Enterprise Boulevard, will also feature family-friendly entertainment and children’s activities, as well as inflatables, sensory zones and interactive games.

Enjoy a diverse selection of food trucks and booths offering everything from barbecue skewers and poke bowls to churros and bubble tea. Check out Markham Fire and Emergency Services’ DRAGO unit, a new specialized auxiliary vehicle used to fight fires by projecting a powerful mist over long distances. Markham residents aged 18 years and older will have a chance to win ‘Coffee for a Year’ courtesy of event presenter Tim Hortons. The celebration culminates with a fireworks show at 10 p.m.

The event has been made possible in part by the Government of Canada. Admission is free and onsite parking is available. Visit markham.ca/CanadaDay for full details.
