York Region improving school safety during back-to-school season

The Regional Municipality of York and traffic safety partners recently unveiled new road safety measures to promote enhanced safety in school zones across York Region.

The safety measures include major improvements to pavement markings. The changes include optical speed bars that signal drivers to slow down.

Wider, more visible pavement markings, including centre lines, lane lines, and edge lines, that will help drivers better understand lane position and road alignment. As well as pavement markings with informative instructions such as “do not block” and “slow down.”

York Region traffic safety manager Nelson Costa highlights the importance of safety in school zones.

“(We are) reminding motorists to slow down, pay attention, and be respectful of young kids, kids on bikes, walkers, and some of our senior populations,” Costa said. “York Region is implementing these safety measures right across all of our schools on regional roads.”

In addition, signage indicating pedestrian crossing areas to help students get to and from school safely is also being implemented.
