DTM Music Nights return to Downtown Markham

06/11/2024 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Live music returns to Downtown Markham on Saturday nights this summer with DTM Music Nights back for another season. Local and regional bands from a diverse collection of genres hit the Origin Square each week at 7:30pm for absolutely free shows every week from July through August, with a special opening night performance on June 8th.

“These events have been a significant addition to Markham’s summer life because they provide a vibrant community space for residents and visitors to enjoy live music in an outdoor setting,” explains Alexandria Kennedy, a marketing manager representing the event.,”This contributes to a sense of community, offers entertainment, and supports local musicians, enriching the cultural fabric of the area.”

Indeed, DTM Music Nights have been a regular part of the summer offerings in Downtown Markham for several years now. Started with the goal of “fostering togetherness” and making the area a destination for local folks in the summer months, the series has exceeded expectations.

“The music involves local artists and bands, ensuring a mix of familiar favourites and new discoveries,” says Kennedy. “The programming aims to reflect the multicultural nature of Markham, showcasing a variety of musical traditions and contemporary sounds.”

This year’s lineup includes the funky soul music of The Jerome Tucker Band on July 6, an eclectic mix of R&B, Rock & Roll, Latin, Soca, and Reggae with Triple Play on July 13, Something Free promises a study in what the audience wants to hear on July 20, and on July 27, Junestone brings a sound grounded in American classical and ’90s alternative hits.

And this is just the first month. Later this summer will see shows by The Edge, The Blackboard Blues Band, Kromatix, The Tonedogs, Marlow, Los Moralitos, What About Bob, and Ginger st. James.

In addition to the music, the Origin Square features a full scale stage with a professional lighting and sound array. Every band, whether a familiar favourite or new discovery will look and sound their best.

“Attendees can anticipate a lively and spirited ambiance,” says Kennedy

These nights are expected to draw a substantial crowd, so there’s plenty of amenities for those that head down, even before and after the show.

“Downtown Markham promises a delightful culinary journey with Kiu Japanese Restaurant, Milestones, Ruth Chris, Costa Sorrento, Terre Rouge and Draco at the Toronto Marriott Markham,” offers Kennedy. “You can even opt to catch a movie or take a ride on our enchanting Pride of Canada Carousel.”

The Pride of Canada Carousel may be particularly interesting because its sculptural characters fashioned from recycled and repurposed materials might best fit the indie art vibe of live music in general. The carousel is part of the Remington Contemporary Art Gallery, which is actually one of the world’s most ambitious public art initiatives. Pieces from the collection are everywhere in Downtown Markham, from parking garages to overhead spaces, along sidewalks and even integrated within the buildings themselves.

“Much like the music nights themselves,” adds Kennedy, “the gallery is fueled by a deep passion, cleverly weaving itself into traditionally sterile spaces like parking garages, common areas, and building facades.”

All of this together should make for some memorable summer evenings.

Origin Square is at 169 Enterprise Boulevard in Markham.
