Kindred Spirits Orchestra brings ‘Romance in Blue and Gold’ to Markham Theatre
Markham music lovers can look forward to an evening of romantic masterpieces and dazzling orchestral performances when the Kindred Spirits Orchestra presents Romance in Blue and Gold at Flato Markham Theatre on Dec. 5 at 8 p.m.
The concert will feature an exciting program of works by three celebrated composers — Franz Liszt, Sergei Rachmaninov and Claude Debussy — showcasing the orchestra’s musical versatility and the talents of rising piano star Aidan Cheng.
The evening opens with Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2, a dazzling display of fiery rhythms, virtuosic runs, and the unmistakable spirit of Hungarian folk dance.
The spotlight then turns to Cheng, grand prize winner of the 2025 International Music Festival and Competition, who will perform Rachmaninov’s Concerto for piano and orchestra no. 2 – a masterpiece of sweeping romantic melodies and emotional depth, brought vividly to life through Aidan’s technical mastery and expressive artistry.
The concert concludes with Debussy’s Images, immersing the audience in a world of shimmering orchestral colors, delicate textures, and evocative moods.
In addition to the main performance, the evening will offer several opportunities for audience members to engage with the musicians and support music education and the arts.
A silent auction supporting music education and the arts will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a pre-concert recital at 7:20 p.m. and a pre-concert talk at 7:30 p.m.
During intermission, audiences will also have an opportunity to take part in a discussion and question-and-answer session featuring pianist Aidan Cheng and host Daniel Vnukowski.
The program promises a musical journey ranging from Liszt’s energetic virtuosity and Rachmaninov’s emotional romanticism to Debussy’s atmospheric orchestral landscapes.
For concertgoers, Romance in Blue and Gold offers an opportunity to experience virtuosic brilliance while supporting the Kindred Spirits Orchestra’s ongoing commitment to musical excellence, education and community engagement.
