Smoke clouds cover Markham, Environment Canada issues warning

Local residents are being warned by Environment Canada due to the wildfires in Northwestern Ontario.

As a result, dark smoke clouds are overhead in Markham today. The GTA is reporting the worst air quality in the world, with some areas reaching red on the Air Quality Health Index. The government strongly advises reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities. 

In addition, it is strongly recommended to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to keep polluted air out.

Markham is at an orange risk level as of July 15, which is considered high risk. The Ontario government advises reducing or rescheduling strenuous activities outdoors if you experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation. 

Conditions may improve by Friday morning, but check for updates regularly until the air quality levels stabilize.
