Year-round co-op placements and internships that allow students to gain practical workplace experience are among the reasons why York Region has been named one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People for 2020.
Administered through Mediacorp Canada Inc.’s Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, the award recognizes organizations that offer the best workplaces and programs for young people launching their careers. “The award is illustrative of our commitment to grow and develop talented individuals who support the needs of our rapidly growing and changing communities,” says York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson.
Winning organizations are evaluated based on the programs they offer to attract and retain younger workers, including tuition assistance, co-op work-study programs, mentorship and training opportunities, and career-management programs.
In addition to co-op placements and internships, York offers an Accelerated Advancement Program for Analysts (Triple A) graduate program. The paid, two-year entry-level program offers rotations that allow aspiring public service professionals to gain diversified experience in public sector finance. The Region is one of CivicAction’s HireNext Employers. The program offers tools for employers to recruit, select and retain young, diverse talent.
In 2019, York hired about 70 graduates into full-time, part-time and casual positions. More than 1,000 people under the age of 35 are currently employed by the Region, which represents nearly one-quarter of its entire staff. York’s recognition as a Top Employer for Young People follows Mediacorp Canada’s recent announcement of York as one of Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for 2020.
