Woman charged with stunt driving while impaired

York Regional Police have charged a 42-year-old woman after she was stopped for stunt driving and found to be impaired with youths in the car.

On May 27, shortly after 6 p.m., officers were conducting speed enforcement on Keele Street, in the area of Langstaff Road. They spotted a sports car travelling at a high rate of speed and confirmed the vehicle was travelling at 140 kilometres per hour in a posted 60- kilometer-per-hour zone.

The vehicle was stopped and officers detected alcohol on the driver’s breath. They also discovered two youths in the back seat of the vehicle, aged 14 and 15 years old. The driver was arrested and transported to #4 District for a breath test. The youths were placed into the care of their father, who was called to the scene and the Children’s Aid Society was contacted.

The driver failed the breath test and was charged. Further investigation revealed she was speeding to show the teens how fast the car could go.

The 42-year-old woman from the City of Vaughan was charged with impaired driving over 80 mg, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, stunt driving and speeding 140 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone.

COVID-19 restrictions have resulted in a reduction in traffic on our roads and overall, YRP has seen a decrease in traffic violations. Unfortunately, the empty streets have brought on an increase in stunt driving charges related to extremely dangerous and excessive speeds.
York Regional Police is making stunt driving offences a high priority to ensure the safety of our streets for those people who are driving to work or going out for essential items. Anyone caught driving more than 50 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit can expect to be charged, have their vehicle towed and their licence suspended.

Citizens are encouraged to report unsafe driving, either by 9-1-1 if the incident appears to be a potential life-threatening emergency or by reporting the incident through the Road Watch program at https://onlinereporting.yrp.ca/RoadWatch.html
