Tutor charged with sexual assault

A 54-year-old man faces several charges after a 17-year-old female student reported being sexually assaulted during tutoring sessions at the accused’s Markham home.

Sivasundaram Navaratnam, also known as Master Siva, was charged on June 1 with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual exploitation. He’s scheduled to appear in court at Newmarket on June 20.

York Regional Police (YRP) Special Victims Unit investigators believe there may be more victims and encourage those individuals to contact police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7071; anonymously at Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-TIPS; or leave an anonymous tip online at 1800222tips.com.

A sexual assault includes any non-consensual contact of a sexual nature. Police encourage victims to report incidents of sexual assault, including historical offences, as there’s no statute of limitations for sexual offences and offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence.
