A brand-new community event is bringing families and music together in historic Unionville.
Markham’s newest open mic – Sweet Sounds of the Old Firehall- takes place every Saturday afternoon inside the Old Firehall Confectionary on historic Unionville Main Street and welcomes musicians of all ages to perform in a fun, musical, family-friendly environment.
Kevin Ker, owner of Epidemic Music Group, developed the event as a welcoming space for child and youth performers as well as families.
“Many open-mic events take place in bars, or later at night,” he said. “I wanted to create a space where young people can come and perform what they’ve been practising and families can come enjoy an afternoon of music. Everyone is welcome.”
Sweet Sounds of the Old Firehall will feature rotating weekly guest hosts such as Sarah Carmosino of Future History and Lost and Found Studios (Netflix), Ariyena Sorani of Blue Opaline and co-founder of Toronto Youth Jam, and Shannon Beresford, who’s 2017 record release debuted at number four on the Canadian Country iTunes charts.
The official launch party takes place on Dec. 1. Anyone who wants to perform can arrive at 4 p.m. to sign up for a performance spot, beginning at 5 p.m.
The event will support the charity 360°kids. Performers and attendees are being asked to bring personal care products for a community initiative the charity is currently running.
