The recipient of the first-ever Women-Led Business Award at the Markham Board of Trade Business Excellence Awards is advising other women leaders with a mission to “move forward boldly, wearing your most comfortable shoes.”
Shirlee Sharkey, President and CEO of SE Health, also advised women leaders to “take the people with you – the people are always the starting point, the middle and most certainly the end” when she collected the award at the 29th Annual Business Excellence Awards Mardi Gras Gala.
The award recognizes a company that has achieved business success and is led and/or owned by a woman or group of women. SE Health, formerly Saint Elizabeth Healthcare, is a national, not-for-profit, social enterprise that has specialized in home care, seniors’ living and family caregiving since its inception in 1908.
Sharkey serves on numerous boards, including Excellence Canada, Canadian Family Network and University Health Network, and has earned a reputation for leading excellence in home care and for implementing health innovation and digital technology to enhance care and the human experience.

(Innovation) and the President’s Award went to the Ladies’ Golf Club of Toronto.
The ASPIRE Awards, which recognize the success of young professionals aged 40 and under who are entrepreneurs, professionals and community leaders, went to Heather Dougan of Marriott Hotels (Community Involvement), Lincoln Lo of Malone Given Parsons Ltd. (Professional Excellence) and Jack Zhou of Wizrobotics (Startup).
