Promenade Mall moviegoers may have been exposed to measles

If you attended Imagine Cinemas at Promenade Mall in Thornhill on June 9 to see Solo: A Star Wars Story, you may have been exposed to measles.

York Region Public Health is issuing the warning following a confirmed case of the measles on that date. Anyone who attended the location between 7 and 11:59 p.m. is advised to check their immunization records or speak with their health-care provider to confirm they have received two doses of the measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV) or have documented measles immunity, such as previous laboratory-confirmed measles infection.

Those who attended the theatre should watch for measles symptoms, which typically appear within 21 days of exposure, in this case, by June 30. Exposure could have taken place at concession stands, washrooms and the theatre lobby.

“Symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes or sensitivity to light, small spots with a white centre on the inside of the mouth and a red rash on the body,” says Dr. Karim Kurji, York Region medical officer of health. “Anyone showing symptoms of measles should call their health-care provider immediately and advise them they may have been exposed to the measles virus.”

People who attended this location outside of this date and time period aren’t considered at risk for this measles exposure. Adults born before 1970 may be at reduced risk because they’re generally presumed to have acquired natural immunity to measles but some may be susceptible to measles infection.

Measles is a highly-contagious disease that spreads easily to those who are vulnerable or not immune. The best defence against measles is vaccination, York’s Public Health board reminds. If you haven’t received two doses of the measles vaccine or haven’t had had measles in the past, you are at risk. Calling your health-care provider or facility in advance of your visit will help reduce the risk of transmitting measles to others.
