Moving to Orange-Restrict under new pandemic response framework

Indoor dining and gyms can operate with slight modifications to health and safety measures but city-owned and -operated fitness centres remain closed as Markham moves from Modified Stage 2 to the Orange-Restrict classification.

The new framework, which came into effect on Saturday, Nov. 7, categorizes public health unit regions across Ontario into one of five classification levels. Markham is part of the York’s public health unit region.

The provincial government’s COVID-19 Response Framework: Keeping Ontario Safe & Open outlines each classification. Green-Prevent restrictions reflect the broadest allowance of activities, with highest risk settings remaining closed. Yellow-Protect features enhanced targeted enforcement, fines and enhanced education to limit further transmission, along with public health measures for high-risk settings.

Orange-Restrict implements enhanced measures, restrictions and enforcement while avoiding any closures. Red-Control features broader-scale measures and restrictions – which are imposed across multiple sectors to control transmission – are the most severe available before widescale business or organizational closure. Lockdown is a measure of last and urgent resort and features widescale measures and restrictions, including closures, to halt or interrupt transmission.

Markham will continue to provide fitness services through virtual programming. Visit www.markham.ca/recreation to find out which recreational outdoor, in-person and virtual programs are available. The City reminds residents that it’s important to monitor yourself for symptoms of COVID-19 and seek assessment and testing, if necessary.
