Mobile software modernizes policing notetaking

York Regional Police (YRP) officers can bid farewell to pen and paper, thanks to ground-breaking new technology that will allow them to complete all their notes electronically.

The police service is one of just three in Ontario to implement Digital Mobility Inc.’s (DMI) Intelligent Mobile Patrol (IMP) software, which runs on mobile phones, mobile workstations and desktop computers that connect to central police databases.

The cross-platform workflow solution allows for immediate authentication of e-notes in the courtroom, creating efficiencies while reducing administrative time and costs. It will significantly reduce the time spent by officers completing detailed notes for court, allowing them more time for patrol and community engagement, the YRP says.

“YRP continues to be provincial and national leaders in utilizing the latest technology to modernize our police service and create efficiencies for officers that ultimately benefit our community,” Chief Jim MacSween says. “We’re pleased to partner with DMI on this innovative solution, which transforms our current paper-based process.”

YRP issued a request for a proposal last summer and selected the IMP e-notes program as the best fit. IMP was designed and developed by DMI in conjunction with a team of current and previous law enforcement officers. DMI is based in Toronto and specializes in tools for law enforcement, EMS and other public safety agencies.

Note-taking is an essential part of police work. DMI wanted to take e-notes and modernize the process for the 21st century,” says DMI Director Nadeem Basaria. “The software provides a complete e-notes solution, integrating systems and reducing duplication, coupled with state-of-the-art encryption and security to ensure the integrity of the data from officer to court.

“We are extremely proud to be working with YRP on this implementation.”

The IMP app features speech-to-text note taking so officers can have their hands free. Dispatch details, identification and driver’s licence details are immediately imported. Investigator notes are shared, allowing for a complete digital investigative workflow.

All sworn YRP members will be fully trained on the IMP system this year.
