Following the recent opening of the Mercedes me Store, this spring the Markville Mall will be the site of a new Saks OFF 5th, the luxury-value retailer with top designer brands. The store is a part of the large Hudson Bay Company brand portfolio owned by American Richard Baker.
The mall opened in 1982 and is owned by Cadillac Fairview. Markville General Manager Daryl Clemence noted that the long-standing success in Markham has been due to the continual reinvestment in the property. Clemence said his team continues to evaluate the retail mix to offer exciting and innovative concepts that resonate with shoppers.
“We’re proud to welcome Saks OFF 5TH to CF Markville. We believe [it] will resonate strongly with our shoppers in Markham and surrounding regions,” said Clemence.
The new 27,000 square foot store will open in the spring and have approximately 50 employees. The retailer already has 119 stores and an e-commerce division.
“Ontario is a key market for Saks OFF 5TH in Canada and we’re excited to continue to grow our presence there,” commented Jonathan Greller, President, Saks OFF 5TH and Gilt. “Our new Markham location will provide area shoppers convenient access to on-trend, designer fashion finds at an exceptional value.”
The 5,600 square foot Mercedes me store opened in September and represents a new direction for the automobile manufacturer. The location within a traditional shopping centre is a new concept for Mercedes-Benz. It’s designed to give consumers and customers a new way to interact and experience the leading automotive brand. The look is out of the Tesla Motors playbook. The premium electric car manufacturer opened its store in Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Mall in November 2012.
“People may be surprised to see Mercedes-Benz in a shopping centre alongside more traditional retailers,” says Philipp von Witzendorff, Vice President and Head of Toronto Retail Operations, Mercedes-Benz Canada. “This is an exciting new opportunity for us to engage with people in new and unexpected ways.”
At the store, Mercedes-Benz will sell select items from the Mercedes-Benz Collection and have five or six of its latest vehicles on display. Mercedes-Benz Product Advisors will staff the Mercedes me Store, which will operate as a satellite location for nearby Mercedes-Benz Markham, located three kilometres away.
“We are excited about this new touchpoint to reach our customers and fans of our brand,” says von Witzendorff. “It’s designed to be a welcoming place for people to informally stop by and check out the latest models, ask questions, or just browse items from the Mercedes-Benz Collection as part of their shopping trip at CF Markville. Ultimately, we are trying to evolve our offering to meet people where they are and fit within their lifestyle.”
Cadillac Fairview is one of the largest owners, operators and developers of best-in-class office, retail and mixed-use properties in North America. The company also invests in retail, mixed-use and industrial real estate in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. The revamp of the mall’s north wing has been constructed by Ellis-Don and over one hundred people have worked on the overhaul. Across from the Centennial Community Centre, it includes a new two-tier parking garage which will provide shoppers direct access to the mall from either level.
