Markham home to four of Canada’s best employers

The City of Markham is home to four of Forbes magazine’s annual ranking of Canada’s best employers.

Honda Canada, founded in 1969 and the parent company of both Honda and Acura vehicle brands in Canada, placed No. 37 on the list. It employs 19,000 people. IBM Canada, one of the country’s top 10 private research and development investors, placed No. 63. It employs 350,600.

Aviva Canada, a leading property and casualty insurance group, placed No. 63. It employs 3,000. AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.), a global semiconductor company and innovation leader, placed No. 94 and employs 1,500.

“Canadians have been enjoying a strong job market of late, with the unemployment rate hovering at 5.6 per cent after reaching an all-time low of 5.4 per cent earlier last year,” Forbes says. “While good news for employees, this environment has tested employers, challenging them to do more to attract and retain top talent. As always, some firms are outpacing the competition.”

Forbes establishes its ranking of the country’s top employers based on a survey of 8,000 Canadians who work for private and public companies with more than 500 employees. Answers are given anonymously. Visit www.forbes.com/canada-best-employers for the complete list.
