With pomp and ceremony and a full house at the Flato Markham Theatre, the latest crop of elected municipal leaders were sworn into office on Dec. 7.
Although the actual term of the new council began Dec. 1, the ceremonial public swearing-in is the first official look at the new council. The evening, before friends and family, was chaired initially by city clerk Kimberley Kitteringham, before returning mayor Frank Scarpitti got to take back his chain of office and gavel and usual chair duties after he swore his oath of office.
The now-standard indigenous land acknowledgement, blessing by a local imam and a couple of artistic performances rounded out the evening before all retired to the Markham Civic Centre for a reception.
With the pleasantries out of the way, the new council will get down to the business of running the city at council chambers on Dec. 12.
