Igniting Hope through music, art, technology

From making cards to thanking frontline workers to using 3D printers to create personal protection equipment for healthcare workers, students from across York Region didn’t let school closures stop them from Igniting Hope during Catholic Education Week.

Elementary music teachers from across the York Catholic District School Board paid tribute to students on ‘Music Monday’ to kick off the week, held May 3 to 10, with a virtual performance of The Beatles’ Here Comes the Sun that was featured on Breakfast Television Toronto, CTV’s Your Morning Show and CBC Radio One’s Here and Now Show.

The YCDSB traditionally celebrates student, staff and community members’ achievements with events and activities throughout the week. This year, celebrations were held virtually, including liturgies, artwork, music, photo and video messages, and daily calls for prayer and reflection. The theme was Igniting Hope.

In Markham, St. Julia Billiart Catholic Elementary School used its 3D printers to produce surgical mask extenders for Markham Stouffville Hospital. Staff at St. Edward CES created a website to share stories of hope and faith. Staff and students at St. Augustine CES shared a glimpse of their homes with one another in a video featuring music written and produced by Alyssa Rubino, a graduate of Father Bressani High School in Woodbridge.

In Whitchurch-Stouffville, staff at St. Brendan CES created a video to tell their students how much they’re missed. Students responded by putting together a video to tell their teachers and staff how much they’ve missed them back. Students at St. Brigid CES made cards for residents at local seniors’ homes.
