Frontline officer’s vigilance results in drugs and sawed-off rifle seizure in Vaughan

York Regional Police has arrested and charged four men with possession of drugs and firearm-related offences after they were investigated by an officer on patrol then fleeing from police.

On Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at approximately 7:30 p.m., an officer on patrol in the City of Vaughan spotted two vehicles parked beside each other in an otherwise empty parking lot of a commercial building in the area of Barnes Court and Creditstone Road. The officer stopped and investigated the vehicles that were occupied by four men. While speaking with the occupants in one of the vehicles, there was a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle were advised they were under arrest. As they were being handcuffed, two of the suspects fled on foot. With the assistance of the Canine Unit, those suspects were later located hiding in a nearby warehouse and were taken into custody.

A search of the vehicle revealed a sawed-off .22 caliber rifle and a quantity of marijuana. Investigators believe that the people involved in this case were travelling from western Ontario, on their way to Quebec, and stopped in Vaughan to purchase marihuana.

“Proactive patrol conducted by frontline officers each and every day is what keeps York Region one of the safest communities in Canada,” said York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe. “In this case, the dedicated work of our frontline members resulted in drugs and a dangerous weapon being removed from our streets.”
