The competition has become the benchmark in the GTA for workplace best-practices. Many of the companies that place in the top 100 routinely rank among the highest in the nation.
The selection process is based on an editorial team that evaluated the employers on eight criteria: (1) physical workplace; (2) work atmosphere and social; (3) health, financial and family benefits; (4) vacation and time-off; (5) employee communications; (6) performance management; (7) training and skills development; and (8) community involvement.
The competition is done in collaboration with the Toronto Globe and Mail. The criteria have remained the same since the competition’s inception and are the same criteria used to judge the national winners.
Any employer with its head office or principal place of business in the GTA may apply for the competition. Employers of any size may apply, whether private or public sector.
The Markham companies are: The Miller Group (highway, street and bridge construction) and Smucker Foods of Canada (food manufacturing).
CRH Canada Group Inc. of Concord (concrete manufacturing). York Regional Police (police service) in Aurora and Mazda Canada (auto wholesale) of Richmond Hill were the other companies.
