Creating opportunities for youth

McDonald’s Corporation is launching Youth Opportunity, an initiative with a global goal to reduce barriers to employment for 2 million young people by 2025 through pre-employment job readiness training, employment opportunities and workplace development programs.

As part of that goal, McDonald’s is also joining the Global Initiative on Decent Jobs for Youth, led by the International Labour Organization, to help accelerate global efforts to tackle the youth employment challenge. Almost one in four young people across the world are not in employment, education or training, which can impact their skills development, earning capacity, long-term employability and well-being.

McDonald’s will offer a new pre-employment work-readiness and soft skills training program in partnership with local community organizations and the International Youth Foundation, a globally-recognized NGO that has more than two decades of experience in youth development around the world.

The program will be piloted in Chicago this year before being rolled out to participating global markets beginning next year through local programs and partners. McDonald’s Canada is among the country’s largest employers of young people. More than 70% of its workforce are people seeking their first or second job. It currently partners with 26 colleges and universities across the country to offer educational opportunities to restaurant managers interested in pursuing post-secondary education in business programs.
