With more than 213,000 Instagram followers, Stouffville terrier Sunny (@fortheloveofsmiley), is a social media sensation.
Every day, tens of thousands of animal lovers across Canada and around the world “like,” comment and admire his every move.
But the celebrity dog had a very different start in life. Born without eyes on the streets of Mexico, Sunny only survived because he was rescued by an animal welfare organization in Oregon and then adopted by Joanne George, who travelled thousands of kilometres to bring him to his new home in the GTA.
In George’s expert care, Sunny’s outlook quickly changed. He quickly became a confident, happy, highly social dog. Like Smiley, his famous pet brother who passed away before Sunny joined George’s family, Sunny is teaching the world to see with their hearts. Sunny and George are continuing the work Smiley began. They are using their celebrity status to raise awareness about the importance of giving rescue pets, particularly those with special needs, a loving home. Together they visit schools and libraries and teach people to work through obstacles and to adopt rescue pets.
On April 27, the duo will be onsite from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Markham Pet Valu for its adoption event.
The event will feature pets from Peace Fur Paws and KOCA Dog Rescue who are looking for the right forever homes.
Sunny will be available for pats and cuddles and will mix with individuals and families looking for a pet. He’ll also be encouraging customers to buy a paper PAW for $1, $2 or $5. PAWs are on sale at all Pet Valu locations for the month of April and 100 per cent of the proceeds will be given to local animal rescue organizations.
