Applications for public board’s arts program opens soon

The York Region District School Board will soon begin accepting applications for its four-year arts program, designed for students committed to achieving excellence in disciplines like dance, drama, visual arts, or vocal or instrumental music.

Some schools also offer piano, string and theatre technology. Students can submit multiple applications to one school. Students earn two specialized arts credits per year that count towards their high school diploma and will receive a certificate upon successful completion.

Students currently in Grade 8 can apply to the arts school that corresponds with their attendance boundary. Grade 9 students can apply to enter the program in Grade 10, space permitting. Four schools offer the Specialized Arts program and will each offer a virtual information night. Visit your school’s Arts webpage to access the registration link.

Unionville High School (www.yrdsb.ca/schools/unionville.hs/Arts/Pages/default.aspx) will offer its information night on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. Alexander Mackenzie High School in Richmond Hill (www.yrdsb.ca/schools/alexandermackenzie.hs/Arts/Pages/default.aspx), Huron Heights Secondary School in Newmarket (www.yrdsb.ca/schools/huronheights.ss/Arts/Pages/default.aspx) and Westmount Collegiate Institute in Thornhill (www.yrdsb.ca/schools/westmount.ci/arts/Pages/default.aspx) will each hold its information night on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.

Applications open Monday, Nov. 9. Program details, attendance boundaries, selection requirements, contact information and application deadlines are posted on respective school websites.
