Housing York Inc., York Region’s non-profit housing corporation, rolled out the red carpet on Jan. 18 and honoured its youngest celebrities on the big screen at SilverCity Cinemas at Richmond Hill. The event celebrates talented, creative youth who inspire positive change in their communities.
“Youth are an important part of our communities,” said Wayne Emmerson, York Region chairman and CEO. “Events such as these offer a unique opportunity to bring our communities together, recognize our youngest residents for their unique contributions and celebrate York Region’s commitment to creating healthy, inclusive and vibrant communities where residents are engaged and inspired.”
In the fall 2017, spirited and ambitious local youth were encouraged to submit personal videos for a chance to win prizes. The winning videos captured family life, culture and faith, technical skills and academic achievements. Housing York received more than 30 submissions and recognized seven youth residents, whose videos took home top prizes: Alexia (Town of Georgina); Angel, Jahleyl and Destiny (Town of Newmarket); Rafae, who claimed the top prize, Shehzil and Humza (Town of Richmond Hill).
“We saw the talent and creativity that thrives in Housing York’s communities,” said Jack Heath City of Markham deputy mayor and Housing York chairperson. “These videos showcase and celebrate the positive actions and contributions youth make to their communities and are a testament to their bright futures ahead.”
Housing York works with residents and partners to deliver housing programs and services that are important to the community.
