Get ready to swirl, sniff, and swig your way through the old world.

The Varley-McKay Art Foundation of Markham is calling on all oenophiles, connoisseurs and budding sommeliers for the fourth instalment of Vintages at the Varley, a fundraiser for the gallery’s exhibitions and programs. Markhamites can take a 16-wine journey through Spain, Portugal and Italy while tasting hors d’oeuvres and listening to ambient jazz music—all while exploring the Varley gallery itself.

The idea of pairing wine with art is one that simply made sense, according to Francesca Dauphinais, Varley-McKay Art Foundation development officer.

“Both wine and art evoke emotions and create experiences,” she said. “There is also a process of creating that goes into both art and wine-making, as well as tradition.”

The foundation anticipates 150 attendees at the event, at $75 per ticket. Though wine is the focal point of the evening, the caterers are specially crafting the culinary menu around the regions being showcased in the bottles.

“Once we have selected the wine region or country we are featuring, we work with local caterers to customize a menu to complement the wines and offer culinary flavours of the featured countries,” Dauphinais said.

The event is intended to be fun, but also informative for people eager to learn more about wine. The wines range in price from $12 to $100, which means getting to sample a product you might not otherwise splurge on.

A representative from the wine distributor will also be on hand to tell patrons about the various wines.
