Maybe the rat race is getting under your skin, or daily stresses of life are getting to be a bit much.

Some people are turning to the phenomenon called “floating” as a way to allow the body and mind to fully de-stress and recharge. To float, you enter the float cabin, about the size of a small car, and lie down on the water. The water in each of the float cabins contains over 800 pounds of magnesium-rich Epsom salts. This dense solution allows your body to float effortlessly on the top of the water.

While you are lying in the floating tank, your body and mind are freed from the stress external stimulation. You are able to completely tune out the world, relax, and unwind.

The research on floating has overwhelmingly revealed that there are numerous positive effects on relieving stress, anxiety, and pain. Many athletes and celebrities float for these reasons.

This summer, Markham is getting its very own floating centre, Float Valley, located at McCowan and Highway 7. They are working hard to finish the final touches and preparations to open their doors to Markham residents.

Float Valley will have six floating tanks, and each tank is completely light-proof, sound-proof, and odourless, for complete sensory deprivation. You also cannot feel the water, because it is heated to the temperature of your skin. This environment allows your body to enter into a state of relaxation for optimal healing.

“I started floating two years ago,” Nadeem Jiwani, the owner of Float Valley explains, “and after my very first experience in the tank, I experienced such deep calm and serenity, something I had never experienced before. Float Valley was born out of my desire to share with others what it truly feels like to have peace of mind.”

“Floating is an incredible practice used to keep balance between the body and mind, and has numerous benefits for stress, pain, and fatigue.”
