Community shines at Greensborough Diversity Fair

In a show of community and togetherness, the diverse students at Greensborough Public School celebrated their differences (and similarities) at their annual indoor Diversity Fair in early April. The school’s population is made up of students originating from 50 different countries around the world – all of whom came together to celebrate each other. The event included professional performers (African drummers, a Hindi singer, First Nations performance, Tai Chi demonstration, Bollywood dancers, Caribbean and African dancers), student performances (band, choir and primary drama club), games and crafts. MP Philpott Explains New Federal Budget

Jane Philpott, MP of Markham-Stouffville, brought home several updates relating to the recently released Budget 2017. Philpott spent time visiting with constituents and travelling to Fanshawe College to discuss the expanded Canada Student Loans and Grants Program. Under the new program (within the Innovation and Skills Plan) twenty three thousand students will be eligible for non-repaying loans each year. The overall plan will also make it possible for Canadians to continuously upgrade their education and skills. Liberal Candidate Mary Ng wins Markham-Thornhill by election

The riding which was created in 2015 and then vacated by longtime MP and former Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, John McCallum has now been secured by Mary Ng. Ng received a lot of support from the Liberal Party to win the federal post and campaigned so heavily that you could not turn on your computer without seeing her banner. Her win was not an easy one, however, as Conservative contender Ragavan Parancothy came behind her at approximately 2,000 votes. Trudeau Makes Special Stop in Markham to Support Liberal Candidate

March 31 – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, made a special stop in Markham-Thornhill this afternoon to support Mary Ng on her campaign trail leading up to the Apr. 3 by-election. The federal MP candidate was joined by the PM at Fancy Chinese Cuisine for dim sum with local families and volunteers. Earlier in the day, the pair also visited with local Tamil community leaders from the Markham-Thornhill area. The Search for Markham’s Shining Star has Officially Begun

March 21: Members of Council, Canada Day Committee Co-Chairs, staff, special performers, and the media gathered at the Civic Centre for the official launch of Star Search Markham. The event will allow for local talent to share the spotlight during this year’s milestone Canada 150 celebrations. Canada Day Celebrations Emcee, Alan Bell of the Flato Theatre was joined by Councillors Amanda Collucci and Alex Chiu in providing an overview on audition submissions.
