Varley Art Gallery of Markham is launching its Winter Exhibitions, which includes a major solo exhibition of new and recent work by Iraqi-born, New York-based artist Wafaa Bilal. The artist is renowned for his online performances and technologically-driven encounters that speak to the impact of international politics on individual lives. In Wafaa Bilal: 168:01, he takes the Bayt al-Hikma, or House of Wisdom, as a starting point for a sculptural installation of a library. Program for electric vehicles launched

If you’re among the growing number of Canadians who have made the switch to an electric vehicle (EV), you’re already familiar with battery range anxiety. But, if you’re running errands at the Markham Civic Centre, you’ll be able to relieve those worries. The Civic Centre now boasts 10 outdoor and six indoor EV charging stations for program participants, plus one Level 2 charging station for public use. Witnesses to ‘suspicious’ fire sought

York Regional Police are are now seeking witnesses to a “suspicious” fire at a Vaughan tattoo shop. The blaze, at Addicted Tattoos & Piercing, appeared to have been extinguished by a sprinkler system when officers arrived on scene at about 9:45 a.m. on Jan. 14.  The business, located in a commercial unit at 200 Maycroft Ave., near Hwy. 7 and Pine Valley Drive, was empty at the time and no injuries were reported. York U Markham campus committee to meet

Construction of the $253-million York University Markham campus is set to begin by the end of the year and remains on track to open its doors to students in 2021. In November, York University Board of Governors approved the preliminary design and budget for the project, paving the way for the design development phase to begin, including production of construction documents in preparation for tendering. The preliminary design, by Diamond Schmitt Architects Inc., features a large, landscaped campus commons area and a 10-storey building at the southeast corner of Enterprise Boulevard and Rivis Road. Kindergarten, French immersion registration

Next fall, your little one will be heading off to kindergarten. But first, you need to register. The York Region school board is accepting kindergarten registration for the upcoming school year beginning Jan. 19. Children born in 2014 are eligible for junior kindergarten this September. Children born in 2013 and not currently attending public school are eligible for senior kindergarten.
