STEM awareness theme of Black History event

Bringing to light the history of black excellence in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is the theme of a day-long session at the Markham Flato Theatre on Jan. 22. Presented by the Markham African Caribbean Canadian Association in conjunction with the City of Markham, the “Hidden Innovators” theme will be explored through a series of addresses and displays as well as performances by local dance and musical ensembles. Winter Exhibitions at Varley Art Gallery

Varley Art Gallery of Markham is launching its Winter Exhibitions, which includes a major solo exhibition of new and recent work by Iraqi-born, New York-based artist Wafaa Bilal. The artist is renowned for his online performances and technologically-driven encounters that speak to the impact of international politics on individual lives. In Wafaa Bilal: 168:01, he takes the Bayt al-Hikma, or House of Wisdom, as a starting point for a sculptural installation of a library. GM adds to Markham’s high-tech hub

Hundreds of high tech sector jobs are expected to be created with the opening of General Motor’s (GM) Canadian Technical Centre in Markham. The car manufacturing giant says it will be filling up to 700 positions in the field of software engineering, with the work focusing on self-driving vehicles as well as in the areas of safety and in-car entertainment and information systems. Fête Chinoise supports MSH

The third annual Fête Chinoise, which immersed guests into a luxurious world of modern Chinese events and lifestyle, was another sold-out event. The annual gala was created to bridge the gap between traditional customs and the modern way of celebration. Markham mayor “thrilled” Toronto on Amazon shortlist

Amazon has narrowed the group of potential sites for its second headquarters to 20 locations and Toronto is the only Canadian city to make the list. The Seattle-based company selected the finalists from 238 proposals. Amazon said it will spend $5 billion at the winning location and will employ 50,000 there.
