City holds national day of mourning ceremony

A recognition ceremony was held at the Civic Centre in honour of those workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to workplace hazards and incidents. Tragically, 852 workplace deaths were documented in 2015 and a commitment to workplace safety is critically needed. “This Day serves as a reminder of the continued need to demonstrate our commitment to the promotion of safe and healthy workplaces, where every worker returns home safely each day,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. Housing affordability measures

The Ontario government is taking action to make housing more affordable for homebuyers and renters by introducing the Fair Housing Plan. This set of 16 comprehensive measures would help more people find an affordable place to call home while bringing stability to the real estate market and protecting the investment of homeowners. These measures include introducing a 15 per cent Non-Resident Speculation Tax (NRST) on non-Canadian citizens, non-permanent residents and non-Canadian corporations buying residential properties containing one to six units in the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH). Theatre recognizes first honorary patron 

Shakir Rehmatullah of Flato Developments, a local builder of homes and communities, was recently given recognition for his support of the arts in Markham being named as the Flato Markham Theatre’s first honorary patron. He has provided financial assistance to the theatre, Varley Art Gallery and other local art initiatives. This is in addition to his support of the Markham Stouffville Hospital and many local sports teams. Earth matters at sustainability fair

The City of Markham partnered with Remington Group to present Earth Day, an event for locals to learn about sustainability and reducing our carbon/ecological footprint. The event included live animal presentations, free rides on the recycled Pride of Canada Carousel, test drives of EV’s and many information booths.
